Hey Jules!
Chapter 1
The "L" Word and Ammityville Horrors
"Jess Mariano! I am going to kill you!!" Rory Hayden screamed as she chased her friend down a long, spiraled staircase.
"Why, Lorelei Leigh Hayden, you shouldn’t do that. What would the tabloids think?" Jess laughed as he ducked into a hallway with Rory at his heels.
"How many times have I told you NOT to call me Lorelei! Rory! Rory! Rory! It’s simple, starts with "R" ends in "Y" and there is an "OR" in the middle. Say it with me: Ro-ry."
"Lo-re-lei!" Jess laughed.
"You die Mariano!" she yelled, collapsing on top of him in a large overstuffed chair.
"You’d never kill me Rory, you’re too nice, plus you need my connections."
"The first part was right, however I don’t think that I need your connections Mr. Mariano."
"Yes you do."
"I’ll just call Tristan and have him kill you."
Jess’ face contorted into a look of mock horror. "Oh no! The big blonde football jock is going to kill me!"
"You know, I bet I can get Paris to kill you. But how to do it? Hmm. That is just something I will have to ask her myself. Gotta go make a phone call, love ya Jess!" she called, skipping out of the room.
"You can’t turn my own girlfriend against me Hayden!" Jess shouted.
"Try me hon."
"You wouldn’t!"
"I would!"
Rory ran giddily up the stairs and flopped onto her bed. She picked up the glittery hot pink phone she had received for her 14th birthday, (Lorelei’s doing) and punched in Paris’ number.
"Hey Paris!"
"Rory?"
"The one and only!"
"Well, actually there are two of you. Your mom’s name is Lorelei too."
"Yes, well, I’m the only one who goes by Rory."
"This is true. Why did you call me at…well I don’t have a clock but it’s Saturday morning and you never wake up before 12 noon on the weekends."
"Jess spent the night."
"That explains all."
"You know him well don’t you?"
"Every inch of his sexy body."
"Paris!"
"What! He’s my boyfriend, you say stuff like that about Tristan all the time."
"Yeah well, I’ve known Jess since we were both in diapers. I’ve seen him pick his nose and scratch his butt. I could never think about him that way, it’s just gross."
"Back to my previous question. Why did you call me?"
"Jess was being mean."
"And you told him that you’d get Tristan to kill him for calling you Lorelei. Then he made a lame remark about a big blonde football jock coming to kill him. So you said that you’d call me and get me to kill him. He told you that you couldn’t turn his girlfriend against him. You said, ‘try me.’ He said, ‘you wouldn’t!’ again and then you ran up the stairs to call me. Am I right?"
"You know Paris maybe you should look into the psychic business, instead of being, and I quote: ‘the greatest reporter that the New York Times will ever see. How’d you know?"
"We go through this every week with you Rory. If you tell me that Jess is being mean to you, then I know that he did it. Or, if you say that Robbie is stupid and you hate having an older brother, and I’m so lucky that I’m an older child, then I know that Robbie pulled something. You really are way too predictable for me Hayden."
"Humph! Now you’re being mean!" Rory whined into the phone, although in reality she was smiling.
"Oh shut up Rory!" Paris laughed good-naturedly.
"I’m going to call Tristan. He’ll make me feel better."
"You do that. Tell him I want to double with you guys sometime at the movies."
"Bye Gellar."
"Later Hayden." CLICK
Rory walked over to where her computer was and began to check her email. There were about three from Tristan, all wanting to know when she and Robbie were going to Venice again, because he and his parents were planning a trip too. One from Robbie, although she couldn’t figure out why he sent her emails because they lived in the same house. A very big house, but the same house nonetheless. There was also one from Jess, but upon looking at the subject, which was ‘Lorelei, Lorelei, Lorelei!’ she promptly deleted it. She looked at her buddy list. Noting that Tristan was on, she clicked on his screen name and began to type.
BluEyedBookWorm: Hey
EvilSexGod: Hey. Get my email?
BluEyedBookWorm: Yep, all three of them. Why didn’t you just come over and ask Mom?
EvilSexGod: 2 lazy
BluEyedBookWorm: You really are quite lazy
EvilSexGod: You aren’t supposed 2 agree!
BluEyedBookWorm: That’s the beauty of it all, I can!
BluEyedBookWorm: I want u 2 come over
EvilSexGod: Y?
BluEyedBookWorm: I miss u and I’m bored out of my mind
EvilSexGod: Should have known
BluEyedBookWorm: R u coming?
BluEyedBookWorm: Mom, Dad, and Robbie are all out for the day
EvilSexGod: And Mariano?
EvilSexGod: He called you the ‘L-word’ again, didn’t he?
BluEyedBookWorm: Yes. Paris won’t kill him 4 me though. She wants us 2 all double.
BluEyedBookWorm: Coming?
EvilSexGod: Already there. IMed you in the limo.
Rory left the computer and almost flew down the stairs to where Tristan DuGrey was waiting for her.
"Missed me?" he chuckled, pulling her in for a kiss.
"Immensely," she answered, turning her head, so that he caught her ear instead of her mouth.
"That wasn’t fair!"
"All’s fair in love and war. Wait, no it’s not. They should really change that saying, you know?"
"No, I don’t know. Would you like to enlighten me Miss Hayden?"
"Maybe later." She grinned, hopping onto his back and commanding him to carry her up the staircase and into her room, where they both collapsed onto the floor.
"You weigh too much."
"Says the quarterback of the Varsity football team."
"What are we doing today while your parents are out of the house Jules?"
"What we always do when my family is gone, duh!"
"Make out on the couch and eventually rip each other’s clothes off in a torrent of passion?" he asked smirking.
"No, the other thing we always do."
"Snoop through Robbie's room?" he tried, hopefully.
"No Tristan! The other, other thing we do when my family is gone!"
"Watch movies in the basement on beanbags and mock many of them together?"
"Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!"
"What do I win?"
"The choice of which movie we watch first of course!" she laughed.
As soon as they got down to the basement, which had Jules’ Haven spray painted on the wall, courtesy of Tristan, they flopped into their respective beanbags. Although there was a beanbag for each member of the family, and also one for Tristan, Maddie, Jess, and Paris, Rory and Tristan were the two who frequented the basement.
Rory remembered when Robbie and Tristan had revealed the basement to her. It was last September, on her 16th birthday. They had been avoiding her all week, and Maddie and Paris were keeping mum on the subject. So she basically hid from them all week, seeking refuge in the school library whenever possible. Tristan and Robbie had blindfolded her and led her down the stairs. When she opened her eyes, she was astounded. There were poofy beanbags all over the place. Hers was turquoise (her favorite color) and had the word "Jules" embroidered on it. Tristan’s was a beautiful hunter green and had "Evil Sex God" embroidered on it. Lorelei’s was hot pink and read "Exalted Coffee Queen". Chris’ was blue and said "Harley Hayden". Jess’ was black (well duh!) and read "Dodger". Paris’ was purple and said "Workaholic". Robbie's beanbag was bright read and had "The Robster" embroidered on it and Madeline’s was a vibrant yellow and had "Madz" on it. Rory laughed as she looked at all of them and then retorted,
"You couldn’t come up with anything better than ‘The Robster’?"
"I never got a nickname, it’s always just been ‘Robbie’."
She laughed and admitted it was true, and then began to search out the rest of her new hideaway. There was a 52-inch flatscreen TV on the wall and a DVD player hidden in a cabinet that was built into the wall. Rory opened it and gasped. Any movie she could ever want to watch was in there. In one corner there was an overstuffed armchair and a lamp. Towards the base of the chair "Jules" was once again embroidered. Built into the wall was a bookshelf which held first editions of all of Rory’s favorite books. That was the best birthday gift she ever could have been given and she told them so over and over again that day and every day for the next week. Tristan, who was patiently and consistently tapping her on the knee snapped her out of her reverie.
