Fearless: Pointless.
I expected little from this show given that the storyline was too much Alias-like and lo' and behold I was not disappointed. Little I expected, little I got. More than little, tiny I should say. Boy this was bad. I have to say for the show's defense that it was a screener, a pre-version of the pilot that ran 38 minutes long so it's definitely not the final version but still, you and I both know that most of the time crap remains crap.
First the plot. As you read above the whole show is about Gaia being Fearless. Once you buy this, well, there's nothing else to it. She's a FBI agent and she has missions to accomplish. Period. From my point of view the whole show is a total ripoff. Just see for yourself: Gaia is a badass, she kicks ass, she's part of the FBI, her father is part of the FBI and her mother has been killed God knows how. Sounds familiar? You figured it out. How lame and obvious is it? Fearless is nothing more than an Alias ripoff. That's about it. And a bad Alias ripoff I might add. The storyline and the dialogues of this first episode were, well, stupid. There's no other words. Really stupid. I could've written that crap myself. The way they made the character of Iann Somerhalder joigned the team at the end of the episode for instance was totally improbable. Basically I had absolutely no fun watching this episode and everybody knows that that kind of show is all about fun. Not Fearless. It's just all about crap.
Then there's the actors: I was happy yo see some familiar faces as co-stars: Eric Balfour from Six Feet Under and Veritas, Bianca Lawson from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and Ian Somerhalder from Young Americans. Eric Balfour as usual was perfect. This guy knows it all, he's such a good actor that he can rebound from show to show. He's the main reason I watched the entire pilot even though you only see him 5/6 minutes tops. Then there's Rachael Leigh Cook. I will be staight forward on this one: what annoyed me the most in this show is Rachael Leigh Cook. She wears a perpetual blank face from the beginning to the end. Can that girl really act? She was a real pain in the ass in that show I tell you that. Now maybe I didn't get her "performance". It's possible. I always had a problem with bad actors anyway. OK I understand that her character is supposed to be fearless so the only way they could demonstrate us that is by having her shows us nothing all, no emotion, really, just a boring, dull, blank face. That's what I didn't get. Her being Fearless doesn't mean she's emotionless. No smile, nothing in the look, no emotion in her voice, zip, nada. I truly didn't care about the character after about 5 minutes. In a show like that you have to care about the character, otherwise it's pointess. But here you just don't give a tiny rat's ass about Gaia. That's the difference between Fearless and Alias. In Alias you watch Sydney having problems and emotions, you care about Sydney, you want her to succeed, she's like your friend. Well in Fearless, you just don't give a shit. The only thing you want to do is slam Leigh Cook in the face to make her react. So my advice would be to change the title of the show from Fearless to Pointess.
I give the pilot a 3 out of 10 rating. And honestly it really doesn't deserve more. But I remind everyone that this was just a screener so I hope that the pilot becomes better over the summer. Cause I really do think there's potential here. But only if you give Leigh Cook a boost, by let's say, try to make her more human. She's just fearless for Christ's sake, which means that she's just a regular girl without the gene of fear. Not a robot. Not a Terminator. And please also change the "my father is in the FBI and my mother has been killed" storyline as we heard it before, and in a better show.
