USA Today Wednesday, September 4, 2002 By the same writer, Robert Bianco: Ailing favorites could use some fine-tuning By Robert BiancoWith the Labor Day holiday behind us, it's time for some belabored favorites to get to work. Now, obviously most of the attention in the weeks ahead will be focused on fall's freshman debuts. But when the excitement over the slate of choices ends -- and this season, that's likely to come sooner rather than later -- people will once again focus on their older prime-time friends. Particularly those that left us in less than prime shape. Still, in the TV world, fall is a season of unbounded optimism, so let's assume all those shaky favorites can reclaim past glories. After all, look at Friends, which bounced back last year to have one of its best and most successful seasons. If Friends can do it, why not, say, ER or The Practice? All they need is a little guidance. So here it is: a worksheet for six favorite shows, one per network, laying out what's wrong and what needs to be done. 'Gilmore Girls' (WB, Sept. 24) * The problem: Summed up in one word: Jess, a bad-boy character who is badly conceived and inadequately portrayed. He throws off the show's delicate fantasy balance and makes even the sweeter moments ring less true. * The fix: No one likes to see an actor lose his job, so perhaps Jess could just fall into an irreversible coma. And is there any chance he could take Law & Order's latest ADA (Elisabeth Rohm) with him? * The prognosis: Alas, we seem to be stuck with Jess, so all we can do is look past him. It worked for one year, so why not another?

What an idiot, of course by the critic or reporter or whatever this guy is pretending to be, by talking bad about Jess it will just make the fans even more loyal. Also at least it allows us the knowledge (at least to the skeptics) that Jess will be back this season so. YAY!

Milo Ventigmilia probably won't be reprising his role as "Jess" on Gilmore Girls. He's no longer under contract with the WB and so far no talks of his making a guest appearance on GG have been made. His spin-off was canceled. And he's supposed to be in a three-episode arc on Boston Public playing a "badboy."
Personally, I'm not a fan of Jess because a lot of his behavior on the show didn't work for me. But its not to say that badboys have no place on the show. But I don't think Jess was written in an appealing enough manner as to gain wide appeal. He had a good side, but to me, the bad choices he made especially towards the end of the season outweighed the good. HOWEVER, I'm not trying to offend anyone who does like him. To each his own. I think that Milo definitely did a good job in his portrayal of Jess and he deserves the fans he's gained from the role so hopefully he'll get plenty of work. My only hope is that he can get out of the badboy type cast that's followed him to Boston Public.
